Letter
Letter
Let's talk about communication using Letter. When this topic came up, many memories of the past were awakened. Today, even though the letter has disappeared from our lives, forty-five years ago, it was an integral part of daily life. Is there any letter? used to be a daily query in all households. My aunt's regularly used to write letters to their brother (my father). Gifts used to be sent by post. My father used to come home and tell that he had sent money orders to his sisters during festivals like Rakhi and Diwali. My grandfather used to write inland letters in very small letters. He would write letters in small and legible letters using vertical and horizontal lines in available space to the maximum extent. After reading the letters, it seemed felt like being in actual presence of the person. The postman used to come home every day and was given tips/ gifts during festivals.
We were transferred when I was in 8th or 9th standard. It was very sad to leave my friends but now I was crazy about writing letters. I started to like writing long letters. I wrote many letters to Hema and Chhaya.
Later, when I got married, I moved to Tamil Nadu, and became estranged from my parents and siblings . Sometimes, when I was writing a letter, I cried with the idea of loneliness. It was reflected in the letter. My parents were very emotional. After reading my letter and reading the letter, they remembered and cried a lot. I was always waiting for my mother's letter. Her beautiful letters were a feast for me. I was happy for the next eight to ten days. I immediately replied to my mother. When my mother attended a baking class, all the recipes were written and sent for me. Recently I came across these and was in tears remembering her.
My father in law and elder brother-in-law (Mr. Bhau) wrote a lot of letters to me after marriage. I didn't have a mother-in-law but these two wrote very nice letters and they didn't let me feel the absence of mother in law. Both them enquired about our well being and advised in various things. Bhau used to purchase Postal first day covers of newly released stamps. He would send his letters using the first day covers to us with strict instructions to properly open the covers and return to him when we met.
The memory of the letter written by my father in English is one of the memories I cherish and have preserved it. Gradually times have changed. Phones have come, we are able to talk to each other as and when desired. The letters are disappearing. However, tears came to my eyes after reading my daughter's first letter after her wedding. I was very happy to see the letter and I replied to her by letter.
Now there are video calls, we talk four times a day, so the new generation will not have fun with the letter.
Yesterday's incident relates to death of my 97-year-old aunt. She was living with my 70-year-old cousin. I called him. We talked in detail. Old memories came out. I asked him why he doesn't use mobile. He said I don't like it. I was very happy to talk to you. Now you write me a letter. I smiled. He said I like letters. If he is happy with the medium, then I promised to send him a letter and put down the phone.
Having written it all, I had the pleasure of taking a big tour of the past
